It has been Mystery Ranch's mission to create the best load carrying equipment in the world, they’ve set out to achieve the best fitting, most comfortable pack harnessing systems possible. Over the last few years, they spent countless hours measuring and fitting hundreds of different body types and logging the results to better understand how their customised fit interfaces with all different body types. The result has been a new sizing configuration that fits just about every human out there and unifies MYSTERY RANCH pack sizing across the board.
The key to a confortable pack load is a properly fitting backpack. Mystery Ranch have designed a more custom fit into their packs with simple sizing based off two measurements. To find the appropriate size waist and yoke for your pack, collect the following two measurements, then reference the sizing chart below.
1. Waist Circumference - Measure around your waist just above the top of your hip bones (roughly two fingers below your belly button).
2 Torso Length - Use a tailors tape or string and have a friend measure between the bony bump at the back of your neck (C7 vertebra) to the spot on your spine behind your belly button.

In Between Sizes?
If you are between sizes on the waist belt, we recommend you choose the smaller size. It is very important that the waist belt is able to securely tighten around your hips. If your waist belt is too big you will have a hard time getting the weight in your pack to transfer from your shoulders to your hips. If you are between sizes on the yoke or if your measurements fall outside standard sizing, please contact us.

Go deep into the woods or high on the ridges, knowing this expedition hunting pack will haul everything you need.
Like its namesake – the Bob Marshall Wilderness – this expedition pack is expansive, accessible and full of surprises. Sitting on the sturdy, new Guide Light MT™ Frame, you can load it from the top via the shroud access, get to all your gear from the side through the full-length, dual side zips and store a sleeping bag in the bottom Speedzip™. After a long stalk and a clean shot, the OVERLOAD® feature allows you to push the weight limits of what’s humanly possible on a packout. Expedition hunts feel like second nature when you carry the MARSHALL.
Please note that we cannot sell these outside of New Zealand.
I have always (40+ years of always) used packs available on the NZ market, starting with the ubiquitous ‘Mountain Mule’ and through various NZ made packs. Never a specific hunting pack though. The MS Marshall purchase was started after the last big load I carried out from a trip and feeling that my, albeit bulletproof, pack was not the most comfortable available. I started a bit of a study of available options. For carrying a big load it is without doubt the most comfortable pack I own. It was well worthwhile setting up the harness correctly, and the result is that I do not feel as if I have been clobbered with a fence standard after a big trip! Although carrying a big load will never be the most ‘pleasant’ experience, this pack goes a long way to manage the load. It works.
After checking out every dedicated hunting pack option out there i have no regrets going this way, it might be a little heavier than some other brands but it is so well made that the extra weight not an issue.
Worth every penny and is great to buy locally and have stock in NZ instead of offshore.
I also got the 60L meat bag and rainfly which are really practical editions to the Marshall.
Just returned form a Thar hunt. Best pack I have had for comfort and ease of use. Great storage. Hasn’t had a lot of use so far so can’t access it hardiness or water resistance but I would buy again just based on it’s quality build, weight, comfort and storage. Nothing like it out there.
After much deliberation and searching around the NZ market for a decent hunting pack, one where I was able to separate my meat from other items I stored in my pack, I finally settled on the MR Marshall. Now this is a big pack. 105lts worth. There is more than enough room for all your gear, separate section for your sleeping system in the bottom compartment, an internal Zoid bag for smaller items and two more roomy areas on the top flap, for items that you need to remove and get to more frequently. This pulls double duty as it is removable back pack which MR says you’d use during a final stalk.
Once you have the pack set up to your own fit out, it is super comfy. I bought a size up in the belt section as I prefer to have more area around my hips padded. The frame is easy to custom fit to your size and once you have it you can also use it on most of the MR pack range, bar the Pop-ups. One suggestion - buy a couple of the gear pouches for the waist belt - it does make life easy when you need to grab a snack or energy gel on the go!
All in all, a great pack and I highly recommend it.
